Now most of you are relaxing and chilling out on your Christmas vacations; some of you have time off work/school and will be staying at home in the warm over the next week or so. So why don't we make use of that hermit time and do something productive? Get your onesie on, warm up a mince pie, pour yourself a Baileys and let’s get comfortable around our computers!
The Challenge

The Literature Community ExperimentThis is a typical example of a ^Beccalicious shower pondering! The idea of this is to try and bring together as many people as possible all in one journal, but not for the sake of making a big number, but to encourage interaction and share useful tidbits. We often say the "literature community" has drifted apart over the past few years and this is just one attempt to try get people to come back together. It's a little hippy, perhaps a far-fetched idea, which is why I am calling it an "experiment". This could be successful and could be a complete fail- only you guys and your efforts can decide its fate!

Community Project: One-Sentence-At-A-Time [CLOSED]

Well, that's a wrap! ~SCFrankles got in the last word this time. Expect the deviation to be posted sometime tomorrow. Thanks for a smashing success!
You've all seen these, I am sure. The idea is one person starts a story with a single sentence. Each participant writes a comment that adds another sentence to continue the story. You can leave as many comments as you'd like, but no two can be back to back. Please make sure you read previous comments so you know what general direction the story is headed.

Some ground rules:

The story will be written in third person omniscient which allows us to be in any character's head at any time. But try not to do too much jumping as that gets confusing.

Absolutely stick to the ONE sentence per comment rule. They can be compound sentences.

Let's aim to have this story done by January 5th at 11:59pm Pacific Time. I'll compile all the comments into one

`thorns joined the Community Volunteer team this time last year and is now returning to the status of "writer-that's-a-little-thorny".

Its been a bit of a loopy year of Thorns and we cannot thank her enough for her time. We know full well she isn't going to fall into that mysterious sinkhole that some former volunteers go into and her heart will still be within the community!

For now, we'd like to ask you all to join us in thanking Julia and wishing her the best of luck. We also hope that her and `GrimFace242 will find reconciliation, since they parted a month ago.

Hi guys! Well it's not so much a competition as it is a project in which you can win prizes... the idea came to me and I thought I'd share it with you all.

Your Mission (should you choose to accept it):
Is to go to the profile of a writer that you like on DeviantART and leave them a review. Not on a specific thing they've written but about them as a writer.
Over my years here on DA I have kind of collected these reviews, and when I self published my poetry collections I used them on the back of my book because some of them were just so sweet.
Perhaps the person you review will add your thoughts on them to their DA page, or to their writing website to help other people get an idea about who they are as a writer.

Literature DD Roundup- December 2012Greetings everyone!
Today is New Years Eve, so before we share the roundup for December, on behalf of the Lit CVs, I wish you all a fantastic 2013!
It’s been a year of progression for the literature community, one I hope you will all join us on the continued journey for 2013. The community isn’t just 4 volunteers, it is ALL OF YOU, and I hope you share your ideas and get involved.
December has showcased some fantastic pieces of writing, and because of this we have actually snuck in a few bonus features. On Christmas day, we had 4 Literature DDs and from mid-December onwards we added some extra DDs over the weekend- something which we will now be doing every weekend!

Transliterations: Modernising Myths Results#transliterations' Modernising Myths Contest: Results!
So here we are, nearly three weeks after rounding up our biggest contest of all time and only three days after we said we'd get here, which has to be some sort of #transliterations record. And it's nearly eight weeks since we first asked you to take your favourite myth, legend or fable and transmute its essence into a modern story. Forty-nine writers answered the call, knocking our collective socks off and putting a serious dent in what we laughably refer to as our free time; I have a newfound respect for judges everywhere, with the possible exception of Judge Judy. It was incredibly difficult coming up with just four winners--take a spin through the entries yourself and you'll see what I mean--but it's not a proper contest if it doesn't reward excellence, and so I hereby present to you:

Daily Deviation Suggestion Drive!Back By Popular Demand!
In January of 2012, the community was challenged by `thorns to do something about their complaints on dA. Thus was born this very group! But before the group, it was just a fledgling idea on `Kneeling-Glory's account that began with a DD Suggestion Contest. The results of that contest were overwhelming. And so, under the prodding of quite a few Community Volunteers, we're going to do it again!

Short Poem Contest!

Rules Update

Announcing Ashok's "Short Poem Contest." The idea is to get people to write really short poems if they haven't already. Can you make every word - maybe even syllable - count? I hope those of you who haven't tried poetry at all will try something for the contest.

Rules

30 words maximum per entry; no set form. Only one original entry per contestant (don't recycle old material, please). Theme is "music" - you can do whatever you want with that, including base your poem on a song lyric (perhaps use the lyric as an epigraph?) Poems must be in English.

The contest will end in 14 days: deadline is May 8th. Just write anything, and write quickly. I'm not here to be snobby about poetry. I want to get people writing, getting to know each other, and promoting each other. I will add anyone who participates to my watchlist, and as some of you are aware, I do provide feedback and try to keep up with as many as I can on here.

I do advise that before you submit a short poem, you read some of what I've written about haiku. This analysis of one by Basho isn't a long read. Watch also what Emily Dickinson does with 21 words.

I request that you link to this post in the description of your poem - spread the word about the contest & make it clear what is an entry for it. Send me a note with a link to your poem, and do feel free to put it in my profile's comments. Don't forget to send a note, though - I'm going to be watching my notes mainly for entrants.

Prizes

I'm accepting donations for prizes. I might buy some points and give them out, but I'd rather do something different. If any of you write something spectacular, I was thinking of asking your permission to put it on my main blog - ashokkarra.com . With 25,000 visitors a month, you'd probably get considerably more attention, but I don't know.

There will be a first and second place prize. Also, a prize for the person who promotes this contest the most - obviously, don't spam people, but if you get a few of your friends to participate, you should get a little something more.

May I ask what your policy is on hyphen usage is? I tend to compound words together with hyphens sometimes and I've done it this time. Should I avoid this altogether or keep it but just not push the limit?

Just be fair to the other contestants. Some really struggled with the 30 word limit. I won't mind a hyphenated word or two, but it'll really help if you're well under the limit.
