We see the sky where it is skylessNot the crystal with the bluish tint,
nor the dark wisps rising from cigars.
Another realm entirely. There,
day ends in royal purple, fiery orange.
Gray walls hold those colors for an instant.
Air places dew drops upon grass,
as if to say the world begins afresh.
Birds fly together, each supporting the other.

Now the sound of change striking the sidewalk,
the smell of dirty pigeons collected.
Noting the white of the closed blinds of hospital rooms.

SummerRipples – murky pond -
fanning out against the dark
the color of chalk

ExileDexterous turn of phrase -
silver moonlight, summer's lake,
illuminating nothing.

Like GlassWe break
like glass
The broken shards litter the earth.
We sting
like glass
when you try to pick up the pieces.
We are transparent.
like glass
We wear our hearts on our sleeves.
We shatter
like glass
when we are dropped.
I fall
like glass
broken on the floor.

Three-way road of desperate strugglesi-)
The flame tastes ever so sweet this subtle time of sundown;
watch its poetry burn a new azure for the summersong of tomorrow.
Moonlit magma awaits my presence and I shall not deny
her wishes, strike a flame and let it rage (never end, my sweet...)
Infernal symmetry blackens the lustful essence of my being

IncinerateFlames licking at large chunks of charcoal
Starving
A tinge of charred meat stains the air
Figures draped in gilded cassocks and scarves
Command as flailing silhouettes feed lustful flames.
Heathens.

JusticeFor my students – not everything I've learned. Just most of it.

Maybe there's some realm
where you're tougher than everyone
and all recognize, scatter.

More than likely people plot.
The many cut down the one -
a red sun falls and reigns.

"Wrong us, shall we not revenge?"
Over the wails of the sick and dying,
the silence of the imprisoned,

I hear you. I think about her.
How her portly cat rolled,
how she flooded her garden,

how she sacrificed for even the deserving.
I know the final test is not what you do,
but who you are. Why that last moment matters.

TeachingStuck.

Birds fan themselves;
in heat they witness
my slow foundation -
so slow nothing builds.

For me, no road.
Even rodents quickly
scurry upon the ground,
finding nourishment,
strength.

Soil. With grubs,
manure, the dead -
not my only refuge,
but my only.

A hoped-for flowering,
a temporary beauty.
Beneath the heat -
before the cold -
a sign things might
be better.

HyperventilationDid you hear that?
Like Something Snapping into Pieces
Words ringing in my mind
Air coming in
Carbon Dioxide rushing out
Something Ruptured, I don't know what
I can't Stop, I can't Breathe
Not enough air
Did you hear that?
Like Something Ripping
Needles and pins Beneath my skin
Did you hear that?
Like Something Tearing up
Leeches writhing under my skin
Shards scattered throughout my chest
Of what was once Whole and Thriving
Throbbing with Passion; A Hole in my chest
This is my End.

One God of ManWe come from a sacred world
Where all that's hers is ours,
With blood and bone she yields
The fruit of a blooming flower.

In the days of infanthood
Rampant with hunger and fear,
A scent, a touch, a lullaby
Are our first lessons in love.

Her bosom is our salvation,
Her lap, the softest bed,
Her voice, the music of life,
Her lips, an ancient promise.

A mother's love never wavers
It rests with her child alone,
The days spent in her dainty arms
Makes a house, a home.

As maturity gently claims us
And whispers words of fancy,
Our love tardily diverges
And haunts interim hearts.

Yet, come early infatuation,
Fiance or pledge

calls, expectations.

Pulse within,
that blank,
feels strangely alien.

Worry: the seed needs
an acorn shell.

Relief is release.
Bee plays with a blade of grass:
outside discovered.

Cemetery!Sepia night crawls slowly by
Casting shadows seem to sigh
Gravestones dominate barren terrain
Filled with humanities endless pain.

To the left stands Cedar grove
Distinctive shape quite colourless
Under tree, lonely grave
Occupant restless, soul to save.

Rustling cedars call a name
They're on familiar terms
Appearance fleeting this sepia night
Wind blows softly through fern.

Silhouette emerges from grave ground
Glides down rows of buried dead
Hesitates before angel who prays
Intentions honourable, tears shed.

Kneeling now in ghostly prayer
Before sculpture of stone
Remembering what? we will never know
Memories belong to the

Aching LoveYou exist only
within my throbbing skull;
that is all the love I need.

Soap In The WaterA young boy smashes plastic boats and planes
together in a soap-filled
bathtub ocean.

Some water slips over the edge
with little explosions
bursting through his infant mouth.

His grandfather left the bathroom door open
so he could keep an eye on the boy.
But right now he is turning
up the volume on his TV
and trying to sink his ears
into the musty, threadbare couch.

She asked for an explanation, she won't see itSo, I'm back here again
I thought another visit to my writing desk
Would make it easier to remember
Exactly why I wanted to forget you

The ink spills onto paper, forming words
It can't reflect
The black and white you invoke in me
Or even the shades of grey.

But, see, there's the problem
I'm not black and white
or some mix thereof
I'm a darker blue than dusk's sky
A brighter green than the leaves outside
A deeper red than the slash on my arm
After all, being monochromatic only
Brings out the colors that people despise
But I digress. This was supposed to be an explanation
Or maybe confession is a better term

Here, we all sneeze more.
It rains.

Dumb slutty kids
underdress for prom.

There, the ice is still frozen.

But.
I saw a female cardinal
in its dull brown beauty
stand out against the brightness
of the day.
It endures.

Not the rejection,
but the recognition of winter.

BachelorSomewhere on the desk,
between the computer, the sketchbooks, the coffee,
lies the telephone.

The floor is a mess.
Containers of take-out Chinese,
junk mail, old bills.
Tempting to sift through a miniature hill
and find that old men's magazine,
the one with that "Keeping a Scorecard" article.

But then the phone rings.
Knowing who it is,
the eyes look up, quickly.
Not unlike those mornings in Catholic school,
Where, once buried in a book,
All of a sudden ready to pray.

SmilesNot even polite, meaningless words.
On these bright, clear days
she's outside.
Moving as if at a playground.
No wave, no "hi,"
certainly no "how are you."
Only a forced, slight smile
when I wave and ask how she is.

Attention might be a game.
It might always be "I'm interested."
But sometimes my grandfather comes to mind.
Sitting alone indoors with bad breath
and books about the apocalypse.
When after eight years I visited,
a bright smile,
eager to be delighted.

Maybe family are the friends you have
because few know how to be friends.

I am a princess from another planetLeft the pink tiara on Mars,
the glittery shoes near Alpha Centauri.
Brought fairy wings to Earth -
yeah, they don't seem to work anymore.

Other women are acknowledged.
One I know atop an office building
chats lively, frequently with many.
Her life, a blur of light and motion.
She's not waiting for her slipper back.

A day among expensive, dull chairs
and long, polished tables.
Standardized work wear.
Visiting in my thrift store dress,
staring out the window.
Natural light hides
the map of the stars
once navigated at a whim.

The shout tore
through walls, bricks flying
out the back of the house.
Some struck cars, smashing windows,
denting steel.
Others killed passer-by.
Pools of blood in the streets.

In a corner of the house
a spider wrapped in webs
found flesh and ate heartily.
We duly note the human liar
walked calmly out the gaping hole
with his property intact.

What could grow here? Sidewalk weeds?
Shy, out of sight, eyed.

Interesting way of portraying this person, as well as the reaction to their prominent desire. Some wear what they want on their sleeve, but in this case it's right there in their eyes

That is an amazing haiku, I'm really really jealous! I think it's amazing that only a few lines can be so powerful and moving, I think this is one of the most amazing haiku's I have ever read. Immediate favourite.

Oh, this is just wonderful! It's a perfect example of poetry where a few words say so much without using a bunch of words. That's what I love about haikus, they have so much potential and you've used it all in Eyes. Wonderful, goes straight to my favs!
